Whitney Pockets Petroglyph Sites 2 & 3

All mileages and coordinates given on this web site are approximate.  Use common sense and caution when following any directions.

Whitney Pockets 2

Whitney Pockets 2 is a roasting pit site consisting of two pits and a shelter.  You will see the big red rock close to the road on your right as you near the end of the pavement.  Start at Waypoint #008 which is about .2 of a mile south of Waypoint #007 (mile 19.7).  The photos below are looking towards the site from the pavement.

Left Photo: This is standing on the pavement looking back towards the site.  I went past the turn (Waypoint #008) to get a better view of the rocks.  The arrow points to the larger of the two pits.  Right Photo: The jeep is parked at Waypoint #008.  The left arrow points to the site and the right arrow is the pavement.  The distance from the pavement to the roasting pits is just a few hundred yards.

An extra, just to confuse the issue: Waypoint #007, the turn for Whitney-Hartman is directly behind the big rock pictured in the photos below.  The road to Whitney Pockets 2 & 3 joins the road to the Whitney-Hartman site just beyond Whitney Pockets 3 (W/pt #010).  Now that I have probably completely confused everything, see map below for clarification.

Whitney Pockets 2 (W/pt #009).  The upper arrow is the large roasting pit and the associated shelter.  The lower arrow points to the smaller lower pit which will be on your left as you are heading towards Whitney Pockets 3 (W/pt #010).

Continuing on past the roasting pits for about another .5 of a mile will bring you to Whitney Pockets 3 (W/pt #010).  Please note that the road between the roasting pits and Whitney Pockets 3 may require a High-Clearance Vehicle depending on the time of year that you visit the sites.  The distance between the two sites is only a half mile, but the road goes through a couple of dry washes that have a tendency to wash out during rains.

Left Photo:  From the pavement (W/pt #008) Whitney Pockets 2 is the right arrow, and in the background is Whitney Pockets 3, the left arrow.  You will go past the roasting pits (Whitney Pockets 2) and continue on the same road for about .5 of a mile to Whitney Pockets 3.  Right Photo: The arrow points to the parking area for Whitney Pockets 3 (W/pt #010).

In the photo below the arrow points to the petroglyphs in Whitney Pockets 3 (W/pt #010).  From here you can continue on to the Whitney-Hartman petroglyph site.  In the parking area (W/pt #010) you notice the dirt road divides.  Both of these roads will join the road to Whitney-Hartman a short distance before you get to W/pt #011 - see "Overview Map" below for clarification.  Your other option is to retrace your steps back to the pavement, turn left and start at waypoint #007, which is the designated turn for Whitney-Hartman.
