White River Narrows Archaeological District

White River Narrows is located approximately 150 miles north of Las Vegas and 90 miles south of Ely Nevada.  It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and is administered by the Ely Bureau of Land Management.

A couple of reminders for the area: Please stay on the "Existing Roads" and do not cut across the open areas just because it is quicker.  Also watch out for rattlesnakes as they are common in this area.

The roads through White River Narrows are dirt and normally in fair to good condition, but as you know, road conditions can -- and do -- change rapidly in the desert.

Usually you can get a brochure at the kiosk at the "Amphitheater" site or you can obtain one from the Caliente BLM Field Office (775) 726-8100.

Below is a BLM Fact Sheet and map of the 7 public rock art sties within the White River Narrows Archaeological District.

Site Locations

If this is your first time or if you have not visited White River Narrows in a long time, I highly recommend the use of topo maps, GPS and/or a navigation system because of the many crossroads in the area.  Also Google Earth is a good way of locating and then way pointing the entrance off of SR 318 and your main route through the site.

Starting at the south end and working towards the North Entrance site the approximate coordinates are as follows:

Cane Site:   37° 49.131'   115° 02.973'

Calendar Fence:   37° 49.267'   115° 02.475

Martian Home:   37° 49.715'   115° 02.542'

Amphitheater:   37° 50.060'   115° 02.363'

Shoshone Frog:   37° 50.309'   115° 01.809'

Single Rock:   37° 50.875'   115° 01.382'

North Entrance Site:   37° 51.732'   115° 01.181'

This is a great site so take your time to look around and do more exploring.  There is no telling what else you may come across.
