Rainbow Canyon #3

Public Rock Art Sites

"Preservation through Education"

Please Note:
Due to flooding in January 2005, the road through Rainbow Canyon is currently closed to public use (except locals) from just below Caliente going south to Elgin.  It is expected to be reopened in the fall of 2008.

Stop #3:

Tunnel No. 5 (.6 miles from Stop 2):  Just past the railroad bridge, look for a place to park near the railroad tracks.  Walk towards Tunnel No. 5.  Look west and uphill before the tunnel at the darkly stained rocks (desert varnish) strewn along the hillside you will find petroglyphs.  There are also petroglyphs on the east side of the river near the cottonwood trees.  There is one large boulder with glyphs on the top.   See map for Stop #3

Left Photo:  Approaching Stop #3 heading north.  Right Photo: This road is just after the bridge and to your left (west)

Left Photo:  Facing the tunnel, the petroglyphs are on the west side of the tracks (to your left) and slightly behind you.

The "tunnel" petroglyphs are near the tracks

The other petroglyphs are located on the east side of Rainbow Canyon Road.  Both  Photos:  I am standing a short distance from "the tunnel" looking across Rainbow Canyon Road towards the cottonwoods and the other petroglyph site.
