Very Important: The driving directions to this site have not been updated since late 2006 There is an excellent chance that the roads and/or road conditions have changed significantly. Contact the BLM, Forest Service, Park Service or whomever, to get the most up-to-date road and trail information. |
Honeymoon Hill is located approximately 19 miles southwest of Ely Nevada on US Route 6 or approximately 4.5 miles north of the intersection of US Route 6 and SR 318/38. Traveling north on US Route 6, watch for mile marker 18. Approximately .4 of a mile beyond it you will turn west off of US 6 onto Jakes Wash Road. From the turn off of US 6 to parking area for Honeymoon Hill petroglyph site, it is approximately 5.3 miles.
Jakes Wash Road conditions: Jakes Wash Road is an unmarked dirt road that is normally in pretty fair condition. The first part of the road is currently "wash boarded", but basically in good condition. The rest of the road can be subject to flooding and wash outs. I am basing this on the amount of mud holes I encountered and it had not rained in the area for over two weeks. The road crosses "Jakes Wash" in two places and depending on how soon after a rain you are visiting the area will depend on whether you can cross the wash or not. At the time that I visited Honeymoon Hill, the "wash" was dry and at least 6 feet deep, so keep that in mind if you see water close to the top.
Caution: The "approximate mileages" given for Honeymoon Hill are intended to be used together with the provided GPS data. As you know, things change rapidly in the desert; be smart - use all available data.
All mileages and coordinates given on this web site are approximate.
Use common sense and caution when following any directions. If it does not look right, don't do it.
Disclaimer to keep my butt out of the proverbial wringer: Check with multiple sources to make sure all your information is up-to-date and accurate. Do not rely on only one source (such as our web site) to be the final word. Contact the BLM, Forest Service, Park Service or whomever, to get the most up-to-date road and trail information. Things can, and do, change very rapidly in the desert due to road construction, flash flooding, and other natural and/or man-made causes. Do the prudent thing and check before you venture out. Also please view the information on our "A Few Tips for Hiking in the Desert" page.

Left Photo: White Pine County mile marker 18 going north. Right Photo: Looking north on US 6 from mile marker 18. Approximately .4 of a mile from here is the turn for Jakes Wash Road. Going north, turn left (west) on Jakes Wash Road. Zero your odometer here.

Left Photo: This photo was taken just after turning west off US 6. Turn right about 50 yards from here. Right Photo: After turning right (left photo) you will go about another 75 yards and make a left turn through the cattle guard gate. You are now on Jakes Wash Road heading towards Honeymoon Hill petroglyph site.

Left Photo: The cattle guard gate at the start of Jakes Wash Road. Right Photo: This is typical of the road between the cattle guard and the site, except for where the road crosses the "wash". The secret to finding this site is to stay with the "main dirt road".

Left Photo: The actual "Jakes Well", is approximately 2.2 miles from the highway. Right Photo: The parking area for Honeymoon Hill petroglyph site. It's approximately 5.3 miles from the highway to the parking area for the site.

Left Photo: Standing in front of my Jeep looking towards the site. The BLM sign is at the edge of the wash. There is a trail from the BLM sign across the wash, but then it fades away as it goes up the slope. At this point, it would be useful to have a GPS with the coordinates for the Kiosk, the main site, and for site 2. Right Photo: The BLM sign at the edge of the wash.

The Kiosk. As you are facing the kiosk, the main site is in the rocks to your right.

Standing near the site looking back towards where I parked.

Left Photo: Honeymoon Hill site. Right Photo: Between where I parked and the site I came across ten of these major size ant hills.

Honeymoon Hill Site 2
Honeymoon Hill Site 2 is located about another .25 of a mile further down the road from where you are parked for the main Honeymoon Hill site. When you get to the fence line, turn right onto the old two tracker going up the hill. The road ends in about 300 hundred yards. Park and hike to the top of the rock pile. There is one rock with a single very cool petroglyph.
