Hiko Springs Petroglyphs

Driving Directions to Nevada's

Public Petroglyph / Rock Art Sites

Hiko Springs (Laughlin) Rock Art Site

Very Important:

The driving directions to this site have not been updated since late 2006  There is an excellent chance that the roads and/or road conditions have changed significantly.  Contact the BLM, Forest Service, Park Service or whomever, to get the most up-to-date road and trail information.

Hiko Springs is  located a short distance off of Hwy 163 on the way to Grapevine Canyon and not far from Laughlin, Nevada.

To reach Hiko Springs, travel south on Highway 95 and turn left (east) on Highway 163 towards Laughlin (zero your mileage at this intersection).   At approximately 8.4 miles, you will see a Nevada Historical Site marker on your right (south side of the road).  Continue traveling east on Hwy 163 and at approximately 9.7 miles you will see a yellow sign for a curve in the road.  About 250 yards beyond the "curve sign", where the curve actually starts and just before the metal road safety barrier, you will see a gravel area where you can pull off Hwy 163 to your right (see photos below).  Follow the dirt road in the wash for approximately .8 of a mile, and park at the concrete foundation.  From where you park, it is a short distance to the petroglyphs.

All mileages and coordinates given on this web site are approximate.

Use common sense and caution when following any directions.  If it does not look right, don't do it.

Disclaimer to keep my butt out of the proverbial wringer:  Check with multiple sources to make sure all your information is up-to-date and accurate.  Do not rely on only one source (such as our web site) to be the final word.  Contact the BLM, Forest Service, Park Service or whomever, to get the most up-to-date road and trail information.  Things can, and do, change very rapidly in the desert due to road construction, flash flooding, and other natural and/or man-made causes.  Do the prudent thing and check before you venture out.  Also please view the information on our  "A Few Tips for Hiking in the Desert" page.

Turn towards Laughlin (east) and "Zero" your mileage at the intersection.

At approximately 8.4 miles from the intersection, you will see this Nevada Historical marker on your right heading east.

Left Photo:  At approximately 9.7 miles you will see the curve sign.  Right Photo:  Just before the curve, pull off the Hwy to your right onto the gravel area.

Left Photo:  The jeep is parked about a 100 feet off of Hwy 163 heading towards Hiko Springs.  Right Photo:  Jeep is still parked in the same place and the arrow points to the dirt road leading to the site.  In the distance you will see several tall cottonwood trees.  That is the general direction that you will be heading.

There are several washes/roads leading to the site - next to the cottonwoods - try to stay with the one that looks like it has been driven the most.  Water washes out the tracks on a regular basis.

As you can see below, this is the most popular road, but it has one rough spot.

Left Photo:  The petroglyph site and the cottonwood trees next to it.  Right Photo:  Parking area at the old foundation.  From here it is a short distance to the site.

Left Photo:  The Hiko Springs Petroglyph Site is in and around this group of rocks.  Right Photo:  Hazards to your body not only include the loose rocks and barbed wire, but the "Cat's Claw" plants seen in the foreground of the left photo.  So watch your step.
