Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

 

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is located approximately 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip on Charleston Blvd (State Route 159).  Go west on Charleston and a short distance after you cross Town Center Dr. and just before you cross over the 215 (Las Vegas Beltway) on your right you will see a Best Buy store, Burger King, Terrible Herbst Chevron Gas Station.  Behind all of this and barely visible is a Costco, (everyone needs a Costco) and to your left is the Red Rock Casino.   Continuing west on Charleston Blvd. for approximately another 5.25 miles, on your right you will see the entrance to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Park Hours:  The park is generally open from 6:00 am until dusk.  The visitor center is open from approximately 8:00 am to 4:30 pm depending on the time of the year. (702) 515-5350
The loop road is a 13.1 mile paved one-way only road (see map below).  Vehicles must stay on the designated roads and there is no off-roading allowed while on the scenic loop drive.

There are four "Public Rock Art" sites located in Red Rock Canyon.

Site 1:  Calico Hills 2 Overlook Petroglyph Site

Calico Hills 2 Overlook Petroglyphs:  Park at the Calico Hills 2 Overlook.  Take the trail towards the Sand Quarry.  In a short distance where the trail forks, take the left (upper) trail.  The distance from the parking area to the marked BLM petroglyph site is approximately 1/2 mile.

Willow Springs Picnic Area

The Willow Springs Picnic Area has several trails, including the Lost Creek - Children's Discovery Trail.  Along with the trails, the area has archaeological sites which include pictographs, petroglyphs, and a roasting pit or two - all of which can be easily accessed.
Site 2:  The "Hand Prints" pictographs are located to the rear of the one group of picnic benches. Coordinates for pictographs:  36° 09.615'    115° 29.845'

 

 Site 3:  The trail to the "Petroglyph Wall" starts at the west end of the second parking area, and is fairly well marked with stones.  The trail goes across the wash to the adjacent cliffs.

Site 4:  Children's Discovery Trail Pictographs are located about half way around the loop.  Coordinates for the pictographs: 36° 09.395    115° 29.821.  No photos available at this time.
