Grapevine Canyon: Site is normally accessible by passenger car.
To reach Grapevine Canyon, travel south on Highway 95 to Highway 163 and turn left (east) towards Laughlin. Traveling east on Hwy 163, at about mile marker 13, look for the small sign for Christmas Tree Pass and turn left (North). This is a graded dirt road and is normally passable by any vehicle. Drive approximately 2 miles on Christmas Tree Pass and you will see the sign for Grapevine Canyon on your left. Turn left into the parking area and from there to the canyon it is approximately a 1/4 mile walk. There are petroglyphs on both sides of the canyon. This is a major petroglyph site.
All mileages and coordinates given on this web site are approximate.
Use common sense and caution when following any directions. If it does not look right, don't do it.
Disclaimer to keep my butt out of the proverbial wringer: Check with multiple sources to make sure all your information is up-to-date and accurate. Do not rely on only one source (such as our web site) to be the final word. Contact the BLM, Forest Service, Park Service or whomever, to get the most up-to-date road and trail information. Things can, and do, change very rapidly in the desert due to road construction, flash flooding, and other natural and/or man-made causes. Do the prudent thing and check before you venture out. Also please view the information on our "A Few Tips for Hiking in the Desert" page.
Traveling south on Hwy 95 turn left (east) on Hwy 163. Zero your mileage here.

Travel east on Hwy 163 about 12.9 miles from Hwy 95 and just before "mile marker 13" you will see the sign for Christmas Tree Pass. Turn left (north) on the dirt road off of Hwy 163.

Extra Note: Christmas Tree Pass Road is almost directly across the road (on the north side of Hwy 163) from these signs.

As soon as you turn onto Christmas Tree Pass Road you will see the sign for "Grapevine Canyon Parking Area".

The driving distance on Christmas Tree Pass Road from Hwy 163 to the turn off for Grapevine Canyon is approximately 2 miles and is on a well graded dirt road. As with any dirt road in the desert, if it has recently rained or rain is predicted, stay off the dirt.

The road to, and the parking area.

Left Photo: Restrooms at the parking area. Right Photo: The petroglyphs are on both sides of the entrance of the canyon. The total distance from the intersection of Hwy 95 and Hwy 163 to the parking area for Grapevine Canyon is approximately 14.9 miles.

Safety Note: The first few miles of Christmas Tree Pass Road traveling north beyond Grapevine Canyon is normally in good condition. After that, many areas of the road will require a high clearance vehicle. A few years ago you could travel the entire 15 miles of Christmas Tree Pass from Hwy 163 back to Hwy 95 in a passenger vehicle, but not any longer.
If you observe any damage or vandalism occurring at a site, please call the BLM Resource Protection hotline (800) 722-3998. All of us need to help take the responsibility to protect our public lands. If we don't, more and more public areas will be closed and none of us wants that. Help by being a "steward" of the site that you are visiting.
