Most of us who have been in the field for any length of time have seen "goodies" just lying around waiting to be picked up.  There are a couple of different ways that you can approach this type of situation.

Option 1 (Preferred): GPS the location (take photographs if possible) of the artifacts and then contact the local agency involved.  If it is a single artifact located in a well-traveled area, you may want to move it (I can hear the groans now) to an area where the artifact won't be damaged or "relocated" to someone's personal collection.  Next, GPS and  photograph the artifact in both spots and send the collected information to the proper agencies.

Option 2: (Deep trouble): You can pick up the artifact and take it home, but first you just might want to view the video clip "The Curse of the Stolen Artifacts" by clicking anywhere on the map below.  If you choose this option, you may end up with fines, forfeiture, and jail time.  You may also want to view our "Theft in Nevada" section by clicking here.

This animated video clip was put together by the California BLM.  You will need to turn on your sound and you may have to allow an "Active X".  The clip is approximately 3 minutes long and you will need to use your "Back Button" on your browser to return to this page.  The clip will start automatically using Quick Time Player.  You may also be able to open it using other programs such as Windows Media Player.
